Castelnuovo Parano

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 902 · Postal code: 03040

In 1059 the abbot Desiderius had a castle built on monte Parano to mark the edge of the Terra di San Benedetto, which was being harassed from Fratte and from Traetto. The tie lasted: until 2014 the village belonged not to a diocese but to the territorial abbey of Montecassino. Along the paved path the patron Mauro came down from Montecassino, and they still show the stone that took the shape of his knee.

The comune has been called Castelnuovo Parano only since 1862: before that it was Castelnuovo di Sangermano and Castelnuovo di Traetto, that is, it took its name from its neighbours. Every three years, in August, the people of Castro dei Volsci and of Ausonia meet at a chapel here, where the wooden Madonna carried from one town to the other is said to have stopped to rest.
