Feast of Saint Fulk
📅 Every year, on 22 May
On 22 May Santopadre, a municipality of 1,410 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, celebrates its patron Saint Fulk (San Folco), an English religious, pilgrim and confessor.
Santopadre has changed its name twice, and the second time it took the name of a man. In ancient times it was called Fiorolo, or Forolo; then, when it was ringed with walls and became to all effects a castrum, a fortified town, it became Castro Forolo. Today's name, instead, comes from the devotion to San Folco, a hermit who lived near the village and who is its patron. Inside those medieval walls everything is still there: it is the smallest village of the district, built in stone, very quiet, made of narrow alleys that go to meet each other in just two streets. It stands in a much exposed position, and for that reason the air is always cool and dry: in summer it is pleasant, in winter it is hard, but snow is seldom seen.
Below the built-up part, along the ring road, is the fountain dal Salcio: it was recovered in the middle of the nineteenth century and put right again in 1990, and it keeps a cistern of Roman date. In the centre a monument carries the names of the men of Santopadre who fell in the first world war. The village has a station of its own on the Avezzano to Roccasecca railway, and an economy of the smallest measure: in 2015 the active firms were fifty-three and gave work to eighty-seven people, that is, little more than one apiece. Football, too, is done together with the others: since 2022 Santopadre, Arpino and Fontana Liri have a single team, called Terra di Cicerone because Cicero was born at Arpino, and it plays its home games at Fontana Liri.
