Rocca d'Arce

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 971 · Postal code: 03030

The mountain has been fortified since the Volsci ringed it with a wall of huge blocks, part of which still stands: it is probably the citadel of ancient Fregellae. After the emperor Henry VI had laid siege to the rock, it was held by his own castellan, Diopoldo of Acerra, who at the end of the twelfth century used it for military operations he had decided on by himself.

In the Palazzo ex Raimondi a museum named after Charles Darwin gathers more than three hundred works by a single artist, Vincenzo Bianchi. In September the village keeps the feast of Rocco and Bernardo, its two pilgrim saints: the body of Bernardo, the patron, was carried up here by a miracle, so tradition says. In August there is instead the feast of the Emigrant.
