Torrice

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 4,608 · Postal code: 03020

The name comes from the towers the village had in the Middle Ages, and medieval too is its form of government, an unusual one: from the eleventh or twelfth century until the first half of the thirteenth, Torrice was ruled by condomini, joint lords who held judicial power, levied taxes and services and governed without any check. They were probably knights whom the bishop of Veroli had won over by granting them land on lease. Standing on a road, the village was burned more than once: in 1129 by the papal militias of Honorius II, in 1165 by the German troops of Frederick Barbarossa. When Ladislas of Durazzo occupied it, the inhabitants rebelled and destroyed every fortification he had built.

In the seventeenth century Torrice solved its economic troubles by cutting down most of its woodland to obtain fields to farm and pasture for animals. In the nineteenth a citizen, Nicola Fabrizi, set up a carbonaro lodge here and linked it to the others in the province: a sign that change was reaching even the far corners of the papal state. On the thirtieth of May 1944, at the crossroads of Sant'Antonio, Canadian armoured units clashed with elements of the German twenty-sixth Panzer division: that engagement is remembered as Torrice Crossroads.
