In Veroli's territory stands the abbey of Casamari, consecrated in 1217: together with Fossanova, it is the purest Cistercian Gothic in Italy, and monks still live there. The Hernician town itself — 20,763 residents above the Cosa valley — keeps rarities of its own: the Fasti Verolani, a Roman calendar of the Augustan age carved in marble and set into a courtyard wall in the old centre.
There is even a Holy Staircase, climbed on one's knees like Rome's, and the tomb of Saint Salome in the basilica bearing her name. Ancient Verulae, allied to Rome since the fourth century BC, remains one of the densest and least-known historic centres of the Ciociaria.
