Campodimele

Province: Latina · Region: Lazio · Population: 638 · Postal code: 04020

The Apprezzo of 1690 says how people lived here: in the village there were no well-off persons, no doctor, no apothecary, «there is only one barber»; all poor and dressed in wool, and the grain the land gave they sold to pay their taxes, eating maize bread for most of the year. The inhabitants were eight hundred, as they are now.

Today Campodimele is known for how long people live there. The name, according to an eighteenth-century tradition, would mean «field of honey», from the bees of the Latin city of Apiolae: it is an explanation that does not hold. On 13 May 1861 the brigands of Chiavone entered the village, took the portraits of Victor Emmanuel and Garibaldi off the walls, put up those of Francis II and Maria Sophia, and declared the kingdom of Italy at an end.
