Capena

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 9,488 · Postal code: 00060

Capena has 9,488 inhabitants above the valley of the Tiber, between the Flaminia and the Tiberina. Until 1933 it was called Leprignano: it took its new name from an ancient city that did not stand here, but on a hill a little to the north, the Civitucola. There stood the Capena of the Capenates, who spoke a language akin to Faliscan and were admitted to the Etruscan confederation; Rome defeated them along with Veii and the Falisci, and every trace of the city was lost.

The site was found again only in the mid-eighteenth century by the scholar Pierluigi Galletti, and it took more than a century for the other historians to agree with him. In the Capenate countryside the goddess Feronia was worshipped: her sanctuary, the Lucus Feroniae, was so rich that in 211 before Christ Hannibal sacked it. On nearby Monte Soratte the Hirpi Sorani officiated instead at the cult of Soranus, and from the god comes the name of the mountain.
