Casape

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 737 · Postal code: 00010

The village was called Casa Corbuli, after the Roman general Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, who had a villa here: it appears so in a document of 992. It changed name with its masters: when it passed to the Barberini it became Casa Ape, for the bees of their arms — deeds of 1656 call it that — and then Casa dei Pio, from which today's Casape.

The castle belonged to the monastery of San Gregorio al Celio until 1527, then changed hands several times. In the seventeenth century the plague ravaged the neighbouring village and spared this one: the people put it down to an image of the Madonna which, they said, began to weep, and which is still venerated in the little square at the end of the village. On the evening between 5 and 6 January the young go through the streets singing the Pasquella.
