Feast of Saint Victoria
📅 Every year, on 9 July
On 9 July Pisoniano, a municipality of 803 inhabitants in the province of Rome, celebrates its patroness Saint Victoria (Santa Vittoria).
The name comes from the Pisos, the Roman family, and in particular from Lucius Calpurnius Piso, who is said to have had a villa here. But for a while it was believed to come from peas — pisus in Latin — and because of that mistake, in the years after 1927, the comune put a branch of a pea plant on its coat of arms.
Once the etymology had been shown to be wrong, the arms were made again, and in those years the lictor's bundle ended up in the middle of them; the present ones carry three mountains, the blue band of the Giovenzano and an ear of wheat. In the village there is a hemp museum, and on the fifth of August, for the Madonna of the Snow, artificial snow is fired from cannon.
