Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie
📅 Every year, on 15 September
On 15 September Marcellina celebrates the Madonna delle Grazie; the municipal territory also preserves Roman-era remains, such as the Cisterna and the Peschiera.
Marcellina has 6,901 inhabitants on the southern spurs of the Lucretili mountains. The name almost certainly comes from the Marcellini, the feudal family that appears in 1153 in a bull of pope Anastasius IV together with the castrum Marcellini; archaeologists, though, think the ancient town was called Regillum and that Appius Claudius came from there, the founder of that gens Claudia which later split into Claudii, Neroni and Marcelli. The Romans also used the place as a marble quarry.
In the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, under the altar, inside an urn, there is an old worm-eaten trunk: legend has it that on the tenth of June 1515 the Madonna appeared beside it to a woman called Giovanna, and that the trunk afterwards flowered with broom. Every second of February the people of San Polo dei Cavalieri come down to Marcellina to venerate it — and that is no small detail, because Marcellina was a hamlet of San Polo for nearly a century, and became an autonomous comune only in 1909, after long disputes about how to divide the territory.
