Guidonia Montecelio

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 81,447 · Postal code: 00012

Guidonia was born in 1937 as the "city of the air": built beside the experimental airfield where the Italian air force chased its records, it keeps the rationalist layout and the vocation — the military airport is still there. Montecelio, the perched medieval village lending the second half of the name, watches from above beneath its fortress.

Lazio's third municipality by population, it is travertine country: the quarries that clad St Peter's and the Colosseum still work. Tivoli, with Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este, is ten minutes away — sleeping here to visit them is a smart move.
