Vallepietra

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 306 · Postal code: 00020

Vallepietra stands at eight hundred and twenty-five metres, perched on a spur of Monte Faito, among the Simbruini mountains and a step away from Abruzzo. Higher up in its territory, on the Colle della Tagliata, is the sanctuary of the Santissima Trinità: probably a rock settlement as early as the Neolithic, later a place of popular devotion linked to the Benedictine houses of Subiaco. At the centre of the cult is a fresco of the Trinity with strong Byzantine character, and the sanctuary remains the point where the old transhumance routes between Lazio and the Marsica converge: people still come on foot, in pilgrimages of whole communities, and it opens only from May to October.

The rest is mountain and water. From the ring of peaks around the valley seven torrents rise that supply many comuni with water, and on the slope of Monte Tarino there is a spot, the snow well, where the snow never entirely melts. That winter up here is a serious matter is shown by January 1985, when a snowfall cut the village off for more than two weeks, without water, power or heating, and supplies arrived by army airdrop; on the night of Epiphany the temperature fell below twenty degrees under zero. On the uplands above the village, at Campo della Pietra and Camposecco, scenes of a celebrated Italian western were filmed.
