Calcata

Province: Viterbo · Region: Lazio · Population: 905 · Postal code: 01030

In 1935 the old village, on its spur of tuff, was declared unfit to live in for fear that the rock would collapse, and the inhabitants moved to Calcata Nuova. It stood empty for some thirty years; then new surveys said the tuff was holding, and the cheap houses were bought by artists and by people from elsewhere, who restored them. There is a single gate to go in by.

Opposite, on another plateau, lies the site of Narce, lived in from prehistory to the archaic age, and not far off are the foundations of the Faliscan temple of Monte Li Santi. In the gorge of the Treja is Opera Bosco instead, an open-air museum where the works are made only with the raw material of the wood.
