Magliano Romano

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,470 · Postal code: 00060

Until 1907 the village was called Magliano Pecorareccio, and the adjective said what was done here: sheep-herding. Magliano itself comes from the Latin Mallianus or Manlianus, a name that marked the ownership of a farm. The village became a comune only in 1958, when it ceased to be a frazione of Campagnano di Roma. The sheep, meanwhile, have stayed in the calendar: on the third Sunday of April the shepherd's hut goes up in the square, and the sheep's milk is worked into cheese in front of everyone.

In the Casale district there is the Grotta degli Angeli, an Etruscan tomb cut in the tuff and later turned into a Christian chapel: a single nave, a barrel vault, three arches on columns carved from the rock. In the 12th century the ceiling was covered with paintings of the Nativity and the announcement to the shepherds, which in a village of shepherds must have meant something, the adoration of the Magi and the presentation in the temple; in 1939 the frescoes were detached for conservation and now hang in the church of San Giovanni Battista, in the old centre. The castle, today Arnaldi and before that Orsini, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries to watch the Valle Nocchia, and keeps its rusticated portal, its great staircase and its fireplaces. The village was destroyed in 1241 by the Ghibellines of Viterbo. At the Mola, on the edge of the Veio park, the stream makes a waterfall and the ruins remain of the mill that ground grain until the middle of the last century.
