Soriano nel Cimino

Province: Viterbo · Region: Lazio · Population: 8,544 · Postal code: 01038

Soriano nel Cimino has 8,544 inhabitants at four hundred and eighty metres, at the foot of Monte Cimino, the highest peak of the Cimini. Up to eight hundred metres it is all chestnut wood; on the summit, instead, there is a wood of centuries-old beeches of some fifty hectares. The «nel Cimino» is an addition of 1871, decided so as not to confuse the town with Soriano Calabro. On the origin of the name the theories are many: among them the Etruscan surus, which means pole or wood.

In 1278 the family that ruled the village was accused of heresy and lost control of it: pope Nicholas III gave it to the Orsini, had a castle built there and spent the summers of 1279 and 1280 in it — and here he died, in the autumn. Two centuries later, in 1489, count Pietro Paolo Nardini killed the castellan and tried to seize the town: the people of Soriano captured him, killed him and drove back his soldiers. The pope rewarded them with privileges and with permission to add one word to their coat of arms: Fidelitas.
