Almè

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,665 · Postal code: 24011

Almè stands at the mouth of the Val Brembana, on the left bank of the Brembo, and its name is what is left of a longer expression: the area was called Lemine, then Lemen in Plano, and by shortening that Almè was drawn out of it. The village began as a military post on the Roman road that ran from Bergamo to Lecco, and it started to matter when the ponte della Regina was built, the bridge that crossed the river towards the plain of Almenno. In 1493 that bridge collapsed, the road lost its importance, and the village declined along with it.

Almè has had to take back its independence more than once: joined and rejoined to neighbouring Villa d'Almè, the last time in 1927, it found a comune of its own again only in 1948. The two churches, too, divide the work between them in a curious way. The new parish church, of 1956, has no bell tower, and so the bells go on ringing from the old one, by now deconsecrated, where paintings by Carlo Ceresa and Palma the Elder have remained.
