Read more →With 243 municipalities, Bergamo is the third Italian province by number of separate councils, behind only Turin and Cuneo. The figure describes the land: it climbs from the Lombard plain into a fan of valleys, where each valley floor kept its own village and some still count a few dozen residents. The provincial capital, Bergamo, sits in the middle of Lombardy, with the province of Sondrio to the north and Cremona to the south.
Almost everyone heads first for Città Alta, the upper town of Bergamo inside its Venetian walls, a separate place from the modern city below, and it earns the attention. The province is worth more than that one stop, though: Treviglio, the second largest town after the capital, and Romano di Lombardia sit out on the flat land to the south, Caravaggio is close by, and Albino and Seriate show the working side of the province.
