Cisano Bergamasco

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,268 · Postal code: 24034

Cisano Bergamasco sits in the Valle San Martino, between the spurs of Monte Linzone and Monte Canto, also called Monte dei Frati; westward the Adda marks the boundary with Brivio. Two readings of the name circulate: land granted to Roman veterans, hence "territory of Caesius", or the Latin cis with amnis, "on this side of the river". Medieval documents write Cisa, then Cixiano, Cixano and Zizano; the present form settles in the fourteenth century, and in 1863 the council added "Bergamasco".

The name turns up in 962 in a deed listing king Berengar II's possessions, and in 1104 a document names the castro di Cisano. The castle still stands on that rise: it belonged to the Vimercati Sozzi de Capitani, who took tithes and a toll from anyone crossing the Adda by barge at a spot called La Sosta, now one of the hamlets. The town's arms show that castle with its two square towers, and in the chief two gold stars for the original settlements of Sozzo and San Gregorio.
