Feast of San Giacomo apostolo
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Gromo, a municipality of 1,239 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron San Giacomo apostolo.
In the Middle Ages they called it the little Toledo: at Gromo the forges beat iron into halberds, swords, shields and armour. Below, inside the mountain, there was silver: the mines are documented from 1026, and the ore taken here fed the mint of Bergamo until 1302.
In 1229 the podestà of Bergamo set down the Capitularia de metallis: it was forbidden to work the silver where it was dug, and the metal had to go down to the city to be struck into coin. The village name comes from the Latin grumus, meaning a rise: and indeed the centre stands on a spur of rock above the Serio.
