Saint Bartholomea Capitanio and Saint Vincentia Gerosa, patrons of Lovere
📅 Every year, on 18 May, in the shrine dedicated to them
Lovere celebrates Saint Bartholomea Capitanio and Saint Vincentia Gerosa on 18 May, in the shrine dedicated to them.
Lovere stands where Lake Iseo ends and the Val Camonica begins, and that position has given it the history of a crossroads. The Romans made it a settlement on the shore, and in the year 200 the emperor Alexander Severus turned the old road of San Maurizio into a military way, the Via Alessandra Augusta, in order to move armies quickly from the plain as far as the Danube. From that period many burials remain, and the so-called treasure of Lovere, a hoard of coins and jewellery now in the archaeological museum of Milan.
The real wealth, though, came from wool. The cloth of Lovere was a much sought-after fabric, and it made the town known throughout Europe: the ears of wheat on the coat of arms stand precisely for the prosperity the cloth works had brought. Under Venice, in 1441, part of the population asked to be placed under Bergamo, and the request was granted: from then on a podestà came from the city every year to administer justice.
