Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Orio al Serio, a municipality of 1,733 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron Saint George, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Orio al Serio is a city. It has been one by decree since 2013, despite having fewer than two thousand inhabitants: the title came because of the airport, which takes up much of the municipal territory and was born here in 1938. During the war the Luftwaffe turned it into a military field; the conversion to civil use was completed in 1970, and the real relaunch began in the autumn of 2002 with low-cost flights. Beside the runway one of the largest shopping centres in Italy has grown up.
Underneath all this, though, there is an old village. The name Orio appears for the first time in a document of 829, which lists the holdings of Bergamo in these parts, and deeds of 986 record the seriole, the channels drawn off the Serio to irrigate the fields. In 1233 the comune obtained its own autonomy. Of the small medieval fort a stone tower twenty-five metres high remains, in the middle of the old centre; and under Venice the village was enfeoffed to the Martinengo-Colleoni, descendants of the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni.
