Saint Alexander and Saint Grata, patrons of Grassobbio
📅 Every year, on 26 August
Grassobbio celebrates Saint Alexander and Saint Grata of Bergamo on 26 August.
Grassobbio sits on the orographic right bank of the Serio, south-east of Bergamo, and its name may describe the soil: it is thought to come from a diminutive of grasso, once meaning fertile and well tilled, with the suffix -ubulus. Small Roman camps are said to have kept watch here south of Bergamo, and the funerary stones found nearby mark a road towards the Val Seriana. The village then seems to have emptied out, resurfacing only in 1186, in an act drawn up for the emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
The coat of arms stacks two ages: above, a silver castle with Guelph merlons wrapped in red flames, the one burned in 1398 in the Guelph and Ghibelline feuds and later turned into a farmhouse, leaving two towers and a wall; below, a red factory with a smoking chimney, for the industrial boom of 1961. The thirteenth-century parish church of Sant'Alessandro was almost wholly rebuilt after the Serio flood of 1646, and eighteenth-century Palazzo Belli, home of count Giampaolo Belli, is now the town library and the Museo Ricordi delle Guerre mondiali.
