Peia

The name of Peia comes from a hat. The Romans sent those condemned to forced labour into the iron mines of the nearby val del Riso; after eleven years of slavery, or once the sentence was served, they were freed and could take a piece of land to cultivate and defend. At the ceremony of liberation they wore the pileus, the cap: for this they were called pileati, and the village where they had settled came to be known as Pilia, the place of the pileati.

The village today is a list of surnames. There are fourteen contrade — Peia Bassa, Ca' Basi, Ca' Bertocchi, Ca' Bettera, Ca' Biadoni, Ca' Bosio, Ca' Brignoli, Ca' Fragia, Ca' Marino, Ca' Orazio, Ca' Predali, Ca' Rottigni, Ca' Zenucchi and Cima Peia — and each bears the name of the family that lived in it, because in the Bergamo dialect Cà means house. The building of the last decades has largely welded them into one another, but the names have stayed.
