Ranzanico

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,261 · Postal code: 24060

In the year 830, in a charter drawn up in the time of Louis the Pious, the village was called Brançanico. From that comes Ranzanico, and the root is thought to be Celtic: perhaps the name of a Brancus, which is itself a votive name of Bran, the Celtic god of war. Livy tells of a king of the Allobroges who bore exactly that name.

The village sits on two levels: the old centre, which they call ol Volt, the high one, on a terrace left by the glacier halfway up the slope; and ol Bass, the low one, down on the shore of Lake Endine. Above rises the mountain everyone calls simply Mut, the Mount: its real name, Monte Quaranta, has been forgotten.
