Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua
📅 Every year, on 13 June
On 13 June Schilpario, a municipality of 1,250 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony of Padua.
In the square at Schilpario the verses Giacomo Leopardi wrote for a fellow townsman are carved in stone: Cardinal Angelo Mai, born here, who in 1820 found among the pages of a reused codex the lost fragments of Cicero's De re publica. The ode Ad Angelo Mai was born of that discovery; the words were set into the square in 2002.
The valley governed itself: the Universitas of Scalve was a kind of small feudal republic, with exemption from military service, freedom to hunt and fish, tax relief and the right to dig in the mines. Iron and zinc kept the place alive until the mines closed in 1972; today they can be visited by little train. On the arms there is a bear and the motto Tutus in silvis, safe in the woods.
