Terno d'Isola

A document of 774 names the church of the martyr Victor in Teranis: from that Teranis came Tereno, the dialect Teren and finally Terno d'Isola. The name was already Latin, for the Romans had made this stretch of plain the Pagus Fortunensis, and the first baptismal church of the Isola bergamasca probably rose on the foundations of a temple of the goddess Fortuna.

A manuscript of 1028 records the weekly market held at San Donato outside the walls, on the road to the river port of Villa d'Adda. It was not enough: between the wars of Guelphs and Ghibellines and those of Milan and Venice, the Isola came to be called the triangle of hunger. Of its defences the Castegnate tower remains, five storeys of conglomerate quarried on the Adda, once home of the Gambirasio; and the arms show five red points equipollent with four of silver, with a black eagle on a blue chief.
