Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Solza, a municipality of 1,961 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron Saint George.
In the castle of Solza, to Paolo Colleoni, was born Bartolomeo Colleoni, the famous condottiero; a stone inside the fortress records it. The castle, which dates from the tenth or eleventh century, was long used as a farmhouse and today, restored, hosts exhibitions. On the municipal coat of arms there is its tower, there are the three reversed hearts that were Colleoni's emblem, there is a human head for the Solza family, which took its name from the village, and there is the cross of Calvary, for the Istituto della Pietà that the condottiero founded in 1466, partly with the contribution of the citizens.
Before that good fortune the village had mostly been a target, because of its nearness to the stronghold of Trezzo sull'Adda: in 1377 Bernabò Visconti devastated Solza and neighbouring Medolago, where sixty people were killed and the church of San Giorgio burned down as well. With Medolago, ironically, Solza was then merged in 1927 into a single comune called Riviera d'Adda: the two villages became separate again only in 1970.
