The church of Saints Peter and Paul went through three disasters in a century. In 1780 an avalanche of snow and earth destroyed it, with many dead; in 1815 another avalanche came down into the bed of the Brembo and made it overflow right beside the church, with more deaths and more damage; and in 1874, when smallpox reached the valley, that same church became the people's refuge, and the inscriptions of those days are still on its walls. Earlier still, in the Middle Ages, the inhabitants owed the monasteries of Astino and Pontida a yearly tribute on the metals they dug from the local mines: iron, copper and silver.

The comune had no old coat of arms, and when it decided to give itself one, in 2005, it went and found it in a book: it took the arms of the noble Cattaneo family from an armorial of 1888 kept in Bergamo, and added a gold V, the initial of its own name, and a blue bend for the Brembo. In the hamlet of San Simone there was a ski resort known for the quality of its snow, lying in the shade of two mountains: the lifts closed in 2017.
