Branzi

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 732 · Postal code: 24010

The name is a tool: it comes from the dialect branz, the tooth of the fork used to gather hay. The Romans came up here for the copper, mined in the village as in the neighbouring ones; later iron was added, and the piodere, the slate slabs used to roof the houses. The first stable settlements are traced to the age of the barbarian invasions, when those who suffered the raids went looking for remote places.

In the Middle Ages Branzi did not exist on its own: with Carona and Fondra it made up the comune of Valfondra Inferiore, and it was the division of 1595 that produced the three villages. Under Venice the place belonged to the district of Valle Brembana Oltre la Goggia, with its head at Valnegra, which enjoyed tax relief and privileges; later the Austrian duties sank the valley's trade. Today the name of the village is on a cheese: Branzi, made with alpine pasture milk, which is also what goes into polenta taragna. Around it, among the mountains, lie eleven alpine lakes.
