Feast of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian
📅 Every year, on 16 September
On 16 September Artogne celebrates Saints Cornelius and Cyprian; the village lies in Val Camonica, in the province of Brescia.
In December 1923, when the Gleno dam gave way, the wave came down the Val Camonica and the backwash reached as far as Artogne: here it drowned a little girl. That is how a distant disaster makes itself felt on the valley floor, with a single victim and no clamour. Eleven years earlier, in 1912, the village had already been struck by a severe flood: the built-up area stands on a huge alluvial fan built up over centuries by the debris of the Re torrent, and the Oglio, before the land was drained, often overflowed.
Three thousand five hundred and seventy-one inhabitants in the province of Brescia, on the left bank of the Oglio; the territory rises from the two hundred metres of the plain to the 2060 of Monte Muffetto. The Polyptych of Santa Giulia describes, around 905, a court of about a hundred people: among them were counted a magister, five missi dominici, sixteen prebendaries and, for the rest, serfs of the glebe. In 1508 Artogne appears under the name Artogno on the map of the Val Camonica drawn by Leonardo da Vinci and kept at Windsor. From 1927 to 1957 the municipality was joined to Pian Camuno under the name Pian d'Artogne.
