Rogno

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,888 · Postal code: 24060

For forty years the town council asked to change the name of its own commune, and for forty years it was told no. The problem was a practical one: the official chief town was Rogno, but the offices were in the hamlet of Castelfranco, where the municipal deputation had also habitually met in Austrian times. Outsiders got lost and parochial rivalry grew between the hamlets, so between 1871 and 1912 several attempts were made to be called Castelfranco di Rogno or Castelfranco Camuno: the prefecture refused every time. The matter closed only in 1929, when the town hall was actually moved to Rogno.

Three thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, though its four parishes belong to the diocese of Brescia, the result of another administrative accident: in 1838 Rogno was detached by order from the district of Breno and attached to that of Lovere; when Breno later returned to the province of Brescia, Rogno was by then at Lovere and stayed in the province of Bergamo. Walled into the top of the bell tower of the parish church of Santo Stefano is the gravestone of a priest of the cult of Caesar.
