Barghe

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,188 · Postal code: 25070

The name probably comes from barek, a shelter: under a great sunlit rock face, in the middle of the Valle Sabbia, fenced wooden shelters were built for goats, cows and sheep, and travellers stopped in them too. In a small cave behind the apse of the chapel of San Gottardo, wedged into the rock of a gorge, remains of prehistoric fauna were found and a blade of grey flint: they stayed until 1944 in a drawer in the sacristy, and then went to the natural history museum of Brescia.

In 1928 the fascist reform abolished the municipality and made it a hamlet of Sabbio Chiese. The people of Barghe never accepted it, and as soon as the war was over they started the paperwork again: the decree restoring the municipality came in 1956, signed by president Gronchi. There was no town hall, though, and the problem was solved by a gift from Mrs Maria Beccalossi, widow Bonacina, which made it possible to buy the land to build one on. The first elections were held in 1957.
