Feast of Saint Zeno
📅 Every year, on 12 April
On 12 April Odolo, a municipality of 2,086 inhabitants in the province of Brescia, celebrates its patron Saint Zeno; the town has the Museo del Ferro and the Fucina di Pamparane.
The oldest thing in Odolo is a soldier's tombstone: Marco Ulpio Recepto, a veteran of the Thirtieth legion, who after his discharge stayed on here, perhaps as a magistrate or as a settler, to keep watch over the tribes of the Valle Sabbia. The stone is now in the museum at Gavardo. The name of the village, on the other hand, probably comes from the Germanic audo, which means wealth, possession — and indeed in the inventory of the monastery of Santa Giulia in Brescia, between 879 and 906, a court of Audalvico appears.
Wealth, in a sense, is what the modern history is about too. In 1427 the Valle Sabbia passed to Venice, which, to secure the loyalty of its new subjects, granted tax reductions and advantages to trade. It worked perfectly: when the French came down into Italy in 1796 and Napoleon in person spent the night at an inn in Odolo, escorted by four hundred dragoons, the people of Odolo stayed cold and went on rooting for Venice — the power that had signed their tax privileges.
