Comezzano-Cizzago

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,717 · Postal code: 25030

Almost every municipality born of a merger has a new coat of arms designed that blends the symbols of the villages joined. Comezzano-Cizzago does not: it uses the two original emblems exactly as they were, set side by side in two distinct shields. In the first, that of Comezzano, are oats and grapes, the produce of the fields; in the second, that of Cizzago, a shield surmounted by a helm with mantling that appears to derive from the arms of some local family and that was already in use in 1910, when it could be seen on the front of the town hall.

Three thousand seven hundred and seventeen inhabitants in the province of Brescia, in the western part of the province. The municipality was born in 1928 from the annexation of Cizzago to Comezzano, in that season of amalgamations which across Lombardy abolished or rechristened dozens of villages. Here, though, the name was not invented and the symbols were not fused: the two villages have remained two, even on the letterhead. At Comezzano stand the castle and the church of Saints Faustino and Giovita, at Cizzago that of the Sacred Heart and San Giorgio.
