Trenzano

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,480 · Postal code: 25030

Trenzano is a village made by water, and perhaps named after it too: some hold that the name comes from the Gaulish Terrae-enz, "by the water", others from the Latin Terentianus, after the gens Terentia who had their estate here. Before the land was drained the area was uninhabitable, because the clay soil pushed the water table upwards and everything stagnated; it was the Ducco, other families and the Benedictine friars who channelled the marshes and the springs into irrigation ditches. In the old centre every house had its own spring basin in front of it, where water was drawn and washing was done.

The comune has been independent since 1392. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the podestà Giovanni da Lezze counted about eight hundred people here. Three farmsteads in the territory bear eastern names, and the reason lies in silk: until the middle of the nineteenth century silkworms brought from China and Japan were raised there. Then, on 12 November 1856, a meteorite fell on these fields, and the scientists named it Trenzano, after the place where its fragments touched the ground.
