Feast of Saint Andrew
📅 Every year, on 30 November
On 30 November Malegno celebrates its patron Saint Andrew; the same day the municipality awards the Mites Terram Possident peace prize.
The first time the name of Malegno appears in a document, in 1156, it is for a brawl: the men of Lozio and those of Borno, on their way in procession to Cividate Camuno, came to blows right here. The village, after all, sits on the road, on the right bank of the Oglio, and other people's quarrels passed in front of it: in 1580 saint Charles Borromeo, a guest of the Bonettini family, found time to reprimand the parish priest, don Bernardino Blanco, for taking too much interest in the disputes among his parishioners. In the Camunian nicknames the people of Malegno are the Cràpe de légn, the wooden heads.
And yet the motto of the comune is Mites Terram Possident, the meek shall inherit the earth. It stands on the coat of arms that the council adopted in 1971, copying it from the portal of a Renaissance house in the village: probably the paschal lamb of the Umiliati, the religious order that was present here. And since 2005, every 30 November, for the feast of Saint Andrew, Malegno awards under that motto a prize for solidarity and peace. Between 1928 and 1947, meanwhile, the village did not exist: it had been joined to Cividate Camuno in a single comune, Cividate Malegno.
