When in 1963 Piamborno broke away from Borno and Cogno from Ossimo to form a new comune, a name still had to be found for it, and the proposals were many: Bornolcese, Camunio, Celtinia, Cinquestelle, Cinqueborghi, Cinqueville, Camuno Romano, Cognola, Colombara Camuna, Pian dell'Annunciata, Ledanio, Pradaborno, Romanino, Tiberino, Riva Camuna. For a while it looked as though it would be called Cisoglio; in the end the simplest solution was preferred, that of sticking the two original names together.

It is the youngest comune in the Val Camonica, but its villages are old: Cogno appears in a document of the thirteenth century and its name comes from the Latin cuneus, the wedge of land. Piamborno had already tried to separate from Borno in 1756, and the doge of Venice said no. In 1905 Vittorio Olcese opened a cotton mill at Cogno which within three years had a hundred thousand spindles and which for decades gave work to thousands of people; the firm, much reduced, is still running.
