Saints Peter and Paul, patrons of the Castle of Provaglio
📅 Every year, on 29 June
Provaglio d'Iseo celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, in the church dedicated to them.
The name is the Latin pro-vallem, «before the valley»: the valley is the hollow below the village, towards the Sebino, filled by the peat basin. Provaglio d'Iseo sits in Franciacorta under Monte Cognolo, and the lake in its name does not reach it. Around 1200 the parish left the pieve of Iseo for the monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa; of the castle that guarded the Brescia road, pulled down by Pandolfo III Malatesta, little is left.
Peat cutting began in the late eighteenth century; by the end of the nineteenth, seven pits were open and two hundred men worked them. Coal and then electricity took its place in the silk mills of Iseo; digging revived in the Second World War and ended in the nineteen-sixties. The arms show five ears of wheat tied with a national-colours ribbon and a blue lion from the emblem of Brescia.
