From 1836, when Pietro Maldini left for Copiapó in Chile, the people of Bene went to Chile and to Uruguay; one of them, Carlo Maldini, made a village of his own, Palomas, around his farm at Salto. With the emigrants' money the village built a nursery school, the bridge over the Civagno and the enlargement of the cemetery: a plaque on the town hall says so, and in the council chamber hangs the portrait of the first man to leave.
In the statutes of Como of 1335 the village appears with its duty: to keep in repair the stretch of the via Regina between two bridges. At the end of the eighteenth century the communal archive was burnt in a quarrel between the parish priest and the confraternity of the leading families. The village was once called Maldino; it became Bene Lario in 1862.
