Lurate Caccivio

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 9,922 · Postal code: 22075

The Lura stream crosses the territory from north to south and gives the town its name; the arms say so plainly: a silver wavy band on blue and, in the upper corner, a mitre recalling subjection to the abbot of San Simpliciano in Milan. The fief was held by the Benedictines of that Milanese abbey by papal grant, and from it grew the Castello, the abbot's residence on the hill, and the hamlet of Caccivio.

In 1197 the fief split into two separate comuni, Lurate Abbate and Cacivio Comasco, apart for more than five centuries; Maria Theresa of Austria's reform brought them together again in 1753, returning Caccivio to the Benedictine fief and renaming the whole Lurate Abbate con Caccivio. The present name dates from 1927. Santa Maria Nascente was consecrated by Pope Urban II where a temple of the goddess Fortuna had stood; since 2010 the town has held the title of city.
