This village's name may preserve the memory of a people who have nothing to do with the place. The most striking hypothesis links it to the Burgaria, an early medieval district of the Milanese county where, during the first Lombard rule, groups of Bulgars had settled: nomad bands who arrived with the invasion of 568 or were later taken in by the Lombards against Byzantium, until about 670. What remains of them is place names, scattered across Molise, Romagna, the Vercelli country and here, where Bulgarograsso probably marked the northern edge of the Burgaria. The second half of the name is thought to come instead from the Germanic grasa, meadow.
Three thousand eight hundred and eighty-three inhabitants in the province of Como. On the coat of arms is drawn the grange of Santa Maria: it was the fortified store where the monks of the abbey of Acquafredda at Lenno kept the harvests and the tithes owed to the abbot. The village has lost its independence twice: in 1807 it was attached to Guanzate and got it back in 1816, then under fascism it was joined to Appiano Gentile together with Veniano. It became a municipality again on the fifth of April 1950.
