Tremezzina

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,078 · Postal code: 22016

Tremezzina is a comune that has been born twice. The first time in 1928, when Lenno, Mezzegra and Tremezzo were put together; abolished in 1947, it was made again in 2014 with Ossuccio added as well, after a referendum in which almost two thirds voted in favour. The bond between those villages is far older, though: in the Middle Ages the pieve of Lenno elected a general mayor who stood above the three communities.

Above Ossuccio rises the Sacred Mount of the Blessed Virgin of Succour, one of the nine pre-Alpine Sacred Mounts that UNESCO has placed on the world heritage list: the church was completed in 1537, and the fourteen chapels were built between 1635 and 1710, with two hundred and thirty life-size statues in stucco and terracotta. Off the shore, in the waters they call Zoca de l'oli because of the olive trees, lies the Comacina island, the only island of Lake Como. At Mezzegra, on 28 April 1945, Mussolini and Claretta Petacci were shot.
