In the countryside east of Cremona the Roman centuriation left a dense and regular grid, still recognisable today from above — except at Malagnino, where a hole opens in the mesh. The discontinuity, the historian Valerio Ferrari explains, coincides with two almost parallel drainage channels that cross the area, the dugali Dosimo and Gazzolo: the water was there and the surveyors had to take it into account, leaving that piece of plain outside the scheme. A little further on, the hamlet of San Giacomo Lovara ended up inside the grid instead, on the axis of the decumani of the first centuriation, the one of 218 before Christ completed in 190.

The territory is crossed from east to west by the via Postumia, opened in 148 before Christ by the consul Spurius Postumius Albinus to join Genoa to Aquileia; in the middle of the village the road is called via Sant'Ambrogio, in memory of the very old church that stood there. The farmsteads, however, were built at a distance from the road, probably so as not to have the irrigation ditches underfoot, and the village took shape late. That Malagnino is the result of many pieces sewn together is said by the coat of arms as well, granted only in 2023: the bar is the Postumia, the blue ribbon among the ears of wheat are the ditches, and the stars stand for the communities that one after another flowed into today's comune.
