Risotto alla Milanese rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter, creamy and soft
Rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter: Milan's golden dish, tied by legend to a glassmaker of the Duomo in 1574.
Read more →There is not a single hill in the province of Cremona. Its 113 municipalities sit on the flattest part of the Po valley, cut through by the Serio and the Adda and by canals dug for irrigation. The river Po marks the southern boundary with Emilia-Romagna, the Oglio the northern one with Brescia. Cremona, the main town, has fewer than 70,000 residents in a province of just over 350,000: this is farming and river country, not scenery.
The one thing everyone comes for is the Museo del Violino in Cremona, devoted to the instruments and their makers. Crema, the second town, deserves more than an hour in its centre; Casalmaggiore sits towards the Po, and Soncino, Pandino and Pizzighettone are small towns a short drive apart. Flat ground and short distances make this good cycling country.
