Martignana di Po

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,893 · Postal code: 26040

Martignana di Po carries the river in its name, and the river serves as its border: on the opposite bank are Colorno and Sissa Trecasali, which are already in the province of Parma. It is a Lombard village that looks out on Emilia, at the far end of the Cremona plain, where the Po both separates and holds together two regions.

The comune's coat of arms was never granted by any decree: it is simply the one historically in use, a shield divided in two with a crowned eagle displayed above and, below, bars of red and blue. Its link with the world, on the other hand, was for sixty-six years a tram: from 1888 to 1954 Martignana had a station on the Cremona-Casalmaggiore tramway, run at the end by the Tramvie Provinciali Cremonesi. Then the line closed, and the roads were left.
