Feast of Saint Agatha
📅 Every year, on 5 February
On 5 February San Martino del Lago, a municipality of 473 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patroness Saint Agatha, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The comune is called San Martino del Lago, but the town hall is not there: it is at Cà de' Soresini, which is a hamlet and which until 1867 was a comune of its own. The place is named for the first time in 1451 as a small farming settlement; in the Napoleonic age it was made a hamlet of Voltido and got its autonomy back with the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia; at the unification of Italy it had a little over five hundred inhabitants, that is, more than the whole comune has today put together. Then, in 1867, it was aggregated to San Martino del Lago — and it has ended up housing its town hall. Today rather more than a hundred people live at Cà de' Soresini.
For seventy years this flat countryside had rails. Between 1888 and 1954 the Cremona to Casalmaggiore tramway, run in the end by the Tramvie Provinciali Cremonesi, had a stop here, and Cà de' Soresini was also the junction of the branch to San Giovanni in Croce, closed in 1928. The rails have long gone, but the noise has come back: since 2011, at the southern edge of the same locality, there is the Cremona Circuit, a track for motor racing. All around remains what was there before the rails and what stayed after them, the farmland of the Casalasco, between Cingia de' Botti, Scandolara Ravara, Solarolo Rainerio and Voltido.
