Oliveto Lario

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,192 · Postal code: 23865

Oliveto Lario was created in 1927 by joining three villages, and those three villages have never stopped being different: Vassena belongs to the diocese of Como and celebrates in the Roman rite, Onno and Limonta belong to the archdiocese of Milan and celebrate in the Ambrosian rite. In a municipality of little more than a thousand people two liturgical calendars are followed.

The reason lies in a donation of 835: the emperor Lothair the First gave Limonta to the abbots of the basilica of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan, who later also received neighbouring Civenna and, much further off, on Lake Lugano, Campione d'Italia. For eight centuries Limonta was thus a jurisdictional island inside the State of Milan, a sort of micro-state, which ended only in 1797 with the arrival of the French. Vassena, on the other hand, had been founded around the year one thousand by farmers and fishermen from Mandello, who rowed across the lake to work the fields on this shore.
