After Solferino, in 1859, the wounded were brought here. The women of Castiglione tended them without asking which side they were on, and watching them was a Swiss man, Henry Dunant: out of what he saw came the idea of the Red Cross.
In the basilica that bears his name is kept the head of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, born in the town in 1568, a Jesuit, who died in Rome nursing plague victims and was made a saint in 1726. Castiglione is also called the city of fountains: the old fountains and washhouses scattered through the town once numbered more than thirty. There are 22,052 residents.
