Curtatone

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 14,570 · Postal code: 46010

Curtatone is a scattered comune: the town hall stands not in Curtatone but in the hamlet of Montanara. Tradition traces the name to a Roman camp under the consul Curtius Odonis; more likely it is the vernacular form of Latin curtis. To the north the Mincio, just inside the boundary, widens into the lago Superiore, first of the lakes ringing Mantua. Recent research would put at another hamlet, Ponteventuno, one possible site of the meeting between Attila and Pope Leo I.

On 29 May 1848 the hamlets of Curtatone and Montanara gave their names to a battle of the first war of independence: six thousand volunteers, mostly Tuscan students with many Neapolitans, against Radetzky's thirty-two thousand Austrians. Eleven years later the peace of Zurich cut the comune in two: San Lorenzo, Ronchi and Balconcello went to the Kingdom of Sardinia, in the province of Cremona; Curtatone was whole again only in 1868, with the province of Mantua restored.
