Saint Bernardino of Siena, patron of the river trades
📅 Every year, on 20 May
Rodigo celebrates Saint Bernardino of Siena on 20 May.
Rodigo and Rivalta sul Mincio are five kilometres apart and grew up in two opposite ways: Rodigo by working the land, Rivalta by living off the river, with fishing and with the cutting and working of marsh reeds. Today the hamlet has about a thousand more inhabitants than the main village. The name Rodigo is said to come from a man called Roto: in Latin Rodingum, that is Roti vicus, the place of Roto, and the village would have been born in the second half of the eleventh century.
The coat of arms is a canting one: a wheel, with the motto Rotat Omnia Secum, and it goes back to the time when Rodigo was a county, from 1479 onwards. In the hamlet of Fossato a plaque records that the patriot and poet Ippolito Nievo stayed there between 1855 and 1861. Villa Bambini, an eighteenth-century building, was instead the hunting lodge of the counts Cavriani. Of today's countryside the best-known product is the melon, which has a fair of its own at the end of June.
